Eating as a family...and with others

So, I don't think that Mr. K would mind me mentioning this story. We're watching the news, I just finished my light dinner (late night at work and I was hooongry and have 90 minutes of yoga in the morning). And K is digging into a piece of fried chicken. I'm not really looking at what he's eating cause you know what...I don't eat meat blah blah blah...but what I'm wondering is how do you all make healthy choices when others are making different choices? I've mentioned that there have been times when I'll keep up with K and eat the same things he is...but I know that I have to stop that.

The question or questions is or are....what do you do when others are making different food decisions - especially family members? How do you politely decline bad food choices and choose good health choices?

Thoughts, talk to me!

  1. Hmmm... I feel like you should just not stress over it so
much! I don't really worry about what other people eat because it's their butt, not mine. :). But seriously -- sometimes it's just more fun for everyone to enjoy hat chocolate cake, and life is too short to sit there chewing in broccoli when cake is on the table. All you gotta go (IMO) is make sure you don't eat cake all the time, and move every day. No stress!

  2. I definitely try not to stress out about it. It has been a challenge though, especially in the black community, to show up to a family reunion or any event that offers good food choices. I think that the food that is brought to those events reflect a more interesting conversation on culture and food...and accessibility to healthy choices. I enjoy some good food and don't want to be downer debbie at events :) But the newlywed nine got me and I'm wondering what other people do (especially those in families and relationships)...because I eat well most of the time, but when I get with others, it's like I don't care that I'm lactose intolerant, pass me the cheesecake and let me try and teach a gym class in the morning. It's all about peer pressure!

  3. yeah, that makes a lot of sense. If I ate with my German relatives all the time, I'd probably be a good 10 lbs heavier. Come to think of it, if Brent was here all the time and we ate as much sausage & schnitzel as we do when he's here, I'd be 10 lbs heavier. :)

I guess the key is to make your entire family life healthy ...maybe not the extended family, but the people you live with every day. hmmm..

  4. I think I may be asking two different questions or bringing up two different ideas...culture and eating and then in the midst of culture and eating...making healthy choices. I just finished reading Women, Food and God and feel like it began to offer insight on some of the latter...but tackling the first. Yikes!
